It has a sharp, intensely sweet, and minty aroma — cool, medicinal, and powerfully reminiscent of muscle rubs and analgesic products. Instantly recognizable and deeply associated with pain relief in the consumer mind.
Almost exclusively valued for its therapeutic properties rather than aromatic blending — its methyl salicylate content (often 96–99%) makes it one of the most potent analgesic oils available, but also one of the most hazardous. Rarely used as a creative blending note; primarily a functional ingredient in muscle relief and pain formulations.
⚠️ Wintergreen is among the most dangerous essential oils in common use:
- Toxic in small amounts — even a teaspoon can be fatal to a child.
- Avoid entirely during pregnancy, with children, and anyone with aspirin sensitivity or salicylate intolerance.
- Should never be used undiluted or ingested.
- Maximum 2.4% dilution in leave-on products for adults.
- Store completely out of reach of children.
